Persian painting of Fath Ali Shah Qajar

This exquisite Qajar-dynasty Persian painting depicts Fath Ali Shah Qajar, the lineage’s second ruler (r. 1797–1834). Celebrated for his distinct appearance, the Shah is shown with his signature long, thick black beard, slender frame, and joined eyebrows—a contemporary symbol of Qajar beauty and nobility. He is adorned in full regal splendor, wearing the jewel-encrusted Kayanid crown and an opulent pearl-embroidered orange robe, while holding a rosary with a jeweled dagger at his waist. Seated by a balcony window, he is flanked by a vase of flowers and a huqqa (water pipe) base, all framed within a delicate oval of gold floral arabesques. The artwork beautifully fuses traditional Persian pictorial styles with European-influenced background landscapes. This magnificent piece is preserved in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
