Featured within a top medallion, the title of this 19th-century book gouache illustration translates to The Description of a feast by one of the Khans.
The painting captures an intimate chamber music scene inside a wealthy ruler’s estate. At the center, a young Khan reclines against an ornate pillow, looking ahead like a model for a photograph or painter. He is surrounded by five women: three musicians, a maid serving a prepared hookah (Qaelyan), and a companion who may be a singer, butler, or his favorite partner (sougli). In the middle of the room sits a tray with a wine carafe, a glass, and kebab skewers—a traditional Iranian pairing.
The setting beautifully blends traditions. The floor features geometric patterns typical of late Qajar miniatures influenced by European art, while a Persian-patterned rug lies beneath the musicians. On the left, a woman plays the kamancheh; on the right, two others play the daf and the paired percussion dohol jofeti. The muted khaki background elegantly highlights the vibrant costumes, including the Khan’s black cylindrical hat adorned with a pearl, silver, and emerald pin. A crenellated border framing the scene evokes classic mansion architecture.
